If you're here: Hi *waves* and I'm really looking forward to whatever you're going to write for me.
Don't feel constrained by what I've put here. If you've already got a great idea, go for it, but if you want some things to get you started, I've noted some preferences below:
Things I like:
Sharp, punchy writing that gets right to the point, lots of action and dialogue.
The sad combined with the absurd.
Grace under pressure and competent characters who do their best despite whatever crazy things are happening to them.
Characters in unusual locations or situations -- the stranger the better, I'm good with it.
Characters who are defined by their desperate want or need for something (blame Vonnegut for that one, with his whole 'every character should want something, even if it's a glass of water' thing)
Negative space, things that are left unsaid and characters with ambiguous feelings.
Canon-divergence.
I'm less fond of:
Long character introspections or descriptions.
Out-of-character behaviour, i.e. characters speaking in ways they wouldn't in the canon.
Humiliation/embarrassment
Unhappy endings -- I don't mind ambiguous, but there should still be some hope.
Mundane alternate-setting AUs, so no coffee shops or high schools, please.
Genfic is great, shipfic is also great!
Ship preferences:
Equal relationships, people who balance each other out and bounce off each other.
Friends to lovers
Slow burn
Banter, seeing each others flaws and being able to poke fun at the other person.
Awkward flirting, meet-cutes, people meeting in bizarre situations and having to make the best of it.
Pining. ALL THE PINING. I love characters who quietly burn for each other, and don't deal with it very well.
I don't like infidelity.
A note on sex: I like a hot sex scene as much as the next person, but don't feel pressured to include them if you don't want to. I prefer sex to be a function of the narrative, to reveal something about the characters or somehow advance the plot, so if it doesn't do that, feel free to nix it.
** No non-con/dub-con please. **
Independence Day (1996) - Tom Whitmore & David Levinson
I'd love to see more exploring Tom and David's relationship -- the sky's the limit! I'd prefer something post-film, in the aftermath of the war, as I'd rather they're friendly with each other. I'd be cool with them becoming buddies, maybe David helping Tom deal with his wife's death. David's neurotic awkwardness playing off against Thomas's quiet pragmatism always charms me impossibly whenever I see the film.
Tom's term as president would be up soon after the war, so do they stay in touch? How does David cope with his status as a new-found hero? Not so great, I'd imagine, so I'd love to see something around that -- Tom helping David deal with fame. Late-night phone calls? Shared interests?
** Could be romantic, or not, I'm happy either way, but I think they could each provide something that the other doesn't get from anyone else, some kind of mutual understanding. **
Given that there's going to be a new film this summer, I'd love to see what both of them have been doing over the years. It seems like David's been helping the planet shore up its alien defences, so I'd love to know how Tom fits into that. Do they keep running into each other? Are they still antagonistic or not? Do they ever hang out and play golf? With these two, anything goes.
Jessica Jones - Jessica Jones/Trish Walker
These two are like yin and yang, a pair of magnets that always seem to come back together. I love the way Trish refuses to take Jessica's bullshit even when she's stonewalling her, and how close they seem to be.
I'd like to know more about them in the past (despite the traumatic nature of their lives, please no focus on parental abuse, I'd prefer hopeful stories). Teenage Trish being led astray by Jessica? The two of them skipping class and doing something fun [no underage sex, please, save it for when they're both adults].
How does their romance happen? Could be in the past, or post-Kilgrave, i.e. a dramatic 'could have lost you' moment, or just the quiet ways they support each other and heal.
I'm fascinated by the ways these two always save each other. I'd like to know more about what they do on their off-days. If set post-series, I'd love to see them doing something fun -- kicking it on vacation (even if Jessica would probably complain the whole time).
Call the Midwife - Patsy Mount & Trixie Franklin
I adore this show, what can I say? I live in Poplar, and it's just fantastic to see a show that explores the rich history of the East End, and focuses on such awesome ladies. So, Trixie and Patsy -- I just love these two! They can both be so charming and effusive, and they've learned to put on a front to the world, but inside they're so terribly brittle and wounded.
** As far as Delia goes, you can do as you wish, but no killing her off, please, I'd like it amicable. It'd be great to see Trixie and Patsy tentatively navigating a relationship together, and how they'd deal with that. Perhaps Trixie coming to terms with her sexuality could be an interesting angle. Trixie's alcoholism can be referenced, but nothing too angsty, please -- I'd like to see her dealing with it in a healthy way, hopefully with the help of Patsy. **
Friendships with the other ladies would be a bonus, too -- I love to see girls supporting each other. No focus on male characters please; I'd like it to be all about Patsy and Trixie.
Rome - Lucius Vorenus & Titus Pullo
The quintessential odd couple! I love the way that these two have always been in the background of history, and how they get on so well despite being such opposites. I'd like Vorenus not to die, please, as that was so terribly sad in the series. The lush backdrop of Rome provides some fascinating settings and ideas, so feel free to explore that as you will. Maybe post-series, they make it out of the city and live a strange, nomadic life together (Pullo inventing bizarre schemes to make money! Vorenus being uber-competent!)
They've seen so much and been through so much, so it would be great to see how that's affected them. I can see Pullo becoming a little more measured as a result of his experiences -- but no less fun -- and Vorenus learning not to take life too seriously.
** Either romance or friendship, your choice. If you do go the romantic route, I'd be pretty into Vorenus and Pullo pining awkwardly for each other, or possibly having sex every now and again and NOT TALKING ABOUT IT. I'd love to see how they'd navigate their feelings for each other, particularly Vorenus, who is just so terribly bad at feelings, the poor bb. **
Thank you! <3
